The long-term health effect of cerebrovascular disease has not been confirmed in the patients of carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication. This study evaluated the risk of ischemic stroke using National Health Insurance Service database of Korea
We identified 27,984 inpatients with CO intoxication diagnosed from 2003 to 2017 from the National Health Insurance Service Database of Korea. The control cohort consisted of 27,984 persons by matching age and sex without CO intoxication. We performed the univariate analysis by chi-square test and multiple logistic regression model. In addition, we performed the survival analysis and calculated hazard ratio (HR) of ischemic stroke by adjusting sociodemographic factors and comorbidities.
The incidence of ischemic stroke was significantly increased in the CO intoxication patients over the follow-up period. The overall incidence of ischemic stroke was 2.3-fold greater in the CO intoxication patients than in controls (HR 2.31, 95% CI 2.01-2.65) after adjusting demographic characteristics, comorbidities, and smoking.
The incidence of ischemic stroke was significantly increased in the CO-intoxication patients. Future studies are needed to investigate the long-term health effects of CO intoxication on the cerebrovascular system.
